In 1956, Cocteau restored and decorated a small church in Villefranche sur Mer on the Cote d'Azur, a picturesque fishing town that had stolen his heart. At the encouragement of the town's fisherman association, he meticulously covered the chapel in painted frescoes that to this day amaze visitors with a breath taking harmony between spirituality and creative artistry. The murals were finally realised in 1957 in a suite of ten.
